The Series 79 Exam is a test you’ll need to pass in order to qualify for a job as an investment banker. The official title of the exam is the Investment Banking Representative Qualification Examination (IB), but it’s pretty much universally referred to as the Series 79. Don’t confuse it with the Series 7 exam, which is the test for people seeking to be licensed as a broker. Series 7 is a much broader test, covering many more subject areas than the Series 79. The Series 79 exam is called the Investment Banking Representative Qualification Examination, and the intent is to determine the competencies of an individual wanting to begin a career as an entry-level investment banker. This test was formulated based on observation and data collection of investment bankers in the field. A Series 79 license qualifies an individual to advise on or facilitate debt or equity offerings through a private placement or public offering or to advise or facilitate mergers or acquisitions, tender offers, financial restructurings, asset sales, divestitures or other corporate reorganizations or business combination transactions.
